Moving Abroad: How Will It Affect My Family

Posted on April 29th, 2009

Migrating overseasImmigrating abroad, even if its temporary is a huge life event: especially for children for whom 2-3 years is a lifetime. Here are some tips to consider before deciding to migrate with your family

Your Children’s Education.

Once a child is in high school the effect of immigrating overseas will have a drastic affect on their education: and American child who excels in Spanish won’t be happy to find that Spanish is not a common option in Australian high schools. Younger children will generally find a move less stressful – particularly if they have siblings that they get on well with.

Children’s Exposure to a New Culture and Language.

Moving to a non-English speaking country can be a great chance for children to become bilingual. Make sure you take advantage and don’t cocoon them in the English-speaking expat community.

Those Left Behind Have Feelings Too.

Are your children close to relatives who are staying behind? Both sides may be upset – how are you going to deal with the conflict? Make sure you think through how to manage this so you don’t get involved in an unofficial “tug of love”!

Older Kids: Home Alone.

These days children often stay at home into their 20’s. However if you are relocating then older children may have to become independent in a hurry. Alternatively children of high school age may want to board in order to finish their high school education in their home country.

Your Spouse May Not Have a Work Permit.

Depending of the conditions of your visa or right to work in a country your partner may not necessarily be legally able to work. Or they may be able to work but not have their qualification recognized or the language skills necessary. This can be either welcome or daunting depending on your family’s circumstances.

Scrapbooking Adhesives 101

Posted on April 29th, 2009

Scrapbookers have so many choices in scrapbooking adhesives. Manufacturers are offering more and more options to meet the needs of this hobby.  Scrapbooking techniques have continued to change over time, and now scrapbookers need adhesives that can handle the newest techniques and trends.

Photo safe is the most important quality when choosing a scrapbooking adhesive.  Make sure any adhesive you choose is archival sage, especially when using them on the back of your photographs.  Scrapbookers have so many choices when it comes to adhesives.

Photo Corners: These are the first adhesives used in modern scrapbooking.  They are still very popular.  Photo corners were a great choice because they allow you to remove the item from the page, giving you a temporary adhesive.  They would very for heritage photos, and any other page elements you don’t want to permanently glue to your layout.  Check your local scrapbooking store for the variety of photo corners available.  They come in different colors, including metallic colors.

Glue:  When it comes to versatility, glue is the best option for adhesives in scrapbooking.  It comes in pens, tubes or bottles, each suited to different types of gluing.  For example, use a glue pen for your smallest page elements.  Glues come in many varieties, including repositionable and permanent.  Specialized glues are available for metal or fabric.

Tape Runners:  These are double-sided adhesives that are sold in rolls or in dispensers.  They are a must-have supply for any scrapbooker.  Similar to glue, they come in permanent and repositionable varieties.  They are convenient and less messy than regular glue.  You run the tape along your photos, paper or any other surface that needs adhesives.  It leaves behind a continuous line of adhesive.

Glue Dots:  What would we do without glue dots for our heavy embellishments?  Glue dots are ideal for ribbon, fabric and textured items as well.  They create a strong bond, and are available in many sizes on either rolls or sheets.

Glue Sticks: Still a favorite among scrapbookers, glue sticks are less messy than most glue. They allow you to cover a wide area quickly. Yet, they still can be used on small items.  Before you purchase glue sticks, make sure they are photo-safe.  You don’t want the ones made for school projects.

Adhesive Spray:  Scrapbookers love adhesive spray because it provides even coverage and transparency.  A perfect choice for vellum, it doesn’t show through like some other glue alternatives do.  Always cover your work space before you apply adhesive glue.  It can easily leave over spray.

Tape:  Double-sided tape is a basic scrapbooking adhesive.  Standard one-sided tape is also a must-have for scrapbookers.  Apply one-sided tape to the back of eyelets or brads to keep the prongs from catching on the paper.

Foam Tape: Foam tape comes in a variety of sizes and shapes, such as dots and squares.  The adhesive is double-sided, and the foam allows page elements to have a dimensional effect. This adds interest to small items and works very well with letters in scrapbooking titles.

With so many scrapbooking adhesives to choose from, you’ll want to stock up on your favorites.  Watch your favorite craft stores for sales.  Make sure you pack a variety of adhesive options for your next workshop or crop.  You’ll be sure to have the right adhesive for your next scrapbooking project.
